As we work on creating our tapestries for Murmuration, we look forward to seeing each one taking its place within the entire installation. We are inspired by the thought of seeing Murmuration exhibited, on view to anyone who’s interested - weavers, textile enthusiasts, birders, environmentalists, who knows? We hope you’ll come along….
The Weaving Shed Gallery, Hillswick Shetland
29th September - 5th October 2024
With a view like this, we can’t wait to be there! The Weaving Shed Gallery enjoys an unrivalled view out over the sheltered bay at Hillswick, providing a wonderful setting for our Murmuration.
We’re delighted to be part of Shetland Wool Week, where we have the opportunity to share our passion for the woolly art of tapestry weaving with textile enthusiasts from around the world.
Please come to see Murmuration displayed for the first time. Several members of our group will be in Shetland, we’ll be more than happy to talk about our experience of the project.
We’ll be talking formally about the project in an evening presentation, where we’ll delve into the project’s inception, development and transformation into an exhibition - warts and all!
And there will also be workshops to take part in: learn the basics of tapestry weaving and ‘weave the view’.
Tickets for the evening talk and the workshops will be on sale as part of the Shetland Wool Week programme, going live for sale probably in June. Get a bit ahead of the game by subscribing to the Shetland Wool Week newsletter, but be aware that activities tend to sell out really fast.
Farfield Mill, Sedbergh, Cumbria
16th October - 22nd December 2024
A favourite exhibition venue, we’re lucky to be able to display Murmuration in this fabulous space. This time, we’ll be on the very top floor making the most of the mill building’s sturdy wooden rafters to hang the Murmuration so that it flies across the room.
For the tapestry weaving nerds amongst you, the fact that the tapestries will not hang against a wall gives you a rare opportunity to study easily the backs of our tapestries. The size and shapes of the individual tapestries present an interesting challenge for hanging, and it’ll all be visible!
Scottish Ornithologists’ Club, Aberlady, Scotland
March - April 2025, exact dates TBC
We’re excited about the opportunity to take Murmuration out beyond a typical textile and weaving audience - birders and their friends. We hope that they’ll enjoy a different take on the way that they might more frequently encounter a murmuration.
And then further afield….
We’re still making plans, but we are REALLY keen to enable Murmuration to travel beyond the UK to the countries where all of our weavers come from. Murmuration sisters in the Netherlands, Canada and the USA are currently searching for suitable venues, and we are trying to work our way round the (considerable) logistical challenges of moving the exhibition around.
This won’t come cheap, so if you’d like to help us with raising enough money to make this happen, please sign up to be a paid subscriber to our Substack. We are very grateful for any support you can give us.
